New Year, New Season

As we move well into the new year,  the holiday Broadway season will come to a close… which means we are beginning a new season on Broadway! We are already starting to see shows leave and have heard many rumors of what is to come this year in the wonderful world of Broadway. Peter And The Starcatcher closed on the twentieth and will be sending it’s magic off-Broadway to the New World Stages sometime this March. The beloved musical revival of Evita will be closing on the twenty-sixth. And it was just recently announced that everyone’s favorite nanny, Mary Poppins, will be closing it’s near seven year run on March third.  Other shows that may be closing ― if their run is not extended ― will be The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

With so many shows closing on Broadway it is opening the doors for many new shows to make their Broadway debuts! Some shows that will be opening this year are the following:

Rodger’s + Hammerstein’s Cinderella (featuring Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana) which begins previews on January twenty-fifth at the Broadway Theatre. Another highly anticipated musical to open this year is Matilda the MusicalBased on the popular movie, Matilda has been over at the West End and will be coming to the Shubert Theatre on March fourth for previews.

Other shows hitting the big White Way this year are Kinky BootsFlashdance The Musical (check out Camp Broadway’s post about Flashdance here!), Pippin, Motown The Musical and A Few Good Men.
Jekyll & Hyde will be heading to Broadway once they finish their national tour starring Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox. Also, The Last Five Years will be back off-Broadway sometime this spring. One other show speculated to take another try at Broadway is Rebecca, which has had its share of downfalls during its creative process.

There have been some rumors going around about shows that will be replacing ones that are leaving this year, but won’t be premiering until 2014. Among those shows are Aladdin, Les Miserables (!) and a stage adaptation of The Exorcist. Only time will tell if these rumors are true or not but nevertheless there are many great shows planning to hit Broadway this year! To find more information about any of the shows be sure to check out their websites for opening dates, how to purchase tickets and more information on the show itself. It’s looking to be yet another great season for Broadway!
