Outstanding Performer in a Musical
The Roger Rees Awards for Outstanding Performance in a Musical – awarded to two students who performed in qualifying roles in their high school’s musical. These two students go on to represent the Greater New York City area at The Broadway League Foundation’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®), The Jimmy Awards®.
Outstanding Performer Judges
ERICH BERGEN is best known as Blake Moran on the hit television show Madam Secretary, and for his performance as Bob Gaudio in the film Jersey Boys, reprising his performance from the National Tour and Las Vegas casts of the Tony Award-winning stage musical. On Broadway, Erich also starred in the musicals Waitress and Chicago, and has been featured on the television shows BULL, The Good Fight and Gossip Girl among others. He will star in the upcoming Broadway musical, BOOP, directed by Jerry Mitchell, and featuring a score by David Foster. Erich is also the creative force behind 6W Entertainment, a full-service production company that has produced over 200 projects for television and live events, including work with Clive Davis, President Obama, John Legend, Cher, Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, and many more luminaries.
KIARA BROWN-CLARK is an AEA/SAG-AFTRA Choreographer, Producer, Dancer, Singer, Actress, and Educator who hails from NYC. She holds a M.F.A. in Dance & Choreography with a concentration in Musical Theatre from Smith College, and a B.F.A. in International Relations from SUNY Geneseo. As a performer & choreographer, she has worked extensively in NYC and throughout the world, choreographing over 200 professional projects throughout her career! Notable credits include Disney’s Mary Poppins, Dreamgirls: The 25th Anniversary with Jennifer Holliday, Once on This Island, The Wiz, Cabaret, Hair, Violet, A Chorus Line, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Kiara is also making magic with the team at Disney Theatrical Group: Coordinator of Education & Audience Engagement, The Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) Program, and Choreographer on several licensing and creative development projects. Recent honors include a nomination into Thee Broadway League’s ‘23-‘24 Rising Stars Fellowship.
JENNY GERSTEN is the VP & Producer of Musical Theater at New York City Center, responsible for the renowned Encores! series. She also serves as Line Producer for the Beetlejuice National Tour and is theInterim Artistic Director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival. She sometimes produces commercially, including Just For Us on Broadway, the award-winning Off Broadway “pie shop” production of Sweeney Todd, and Gavin Creel’s Walk on Through. She works with Jessica Hecht on The Campfire Project, an arts program that serves Syrian and Ukrainian refugees overseas. Previously, she was ExecutiveDirector at Friends of the High Line and Associate Producer of The Public Theater. At sea, she is the Creative Producer of Virgin Voyages.
BAAYORK LEE has performed in a dozen original Broadway shows. She created the role of Connie in A Chorus Line while continuing the legacy of Michael Bennett directing companies around the world,most recently Antonio Banderas company in Spain. She has directed King and I, South Pacific, Cinderella (R&H), Porgy and Bess, Carmen Jones, Jesus Christ Superstar, Barnum, Gypsy, Cats, Beauty and the Beast and others. She also directed the 2021 Wicked in Concert for PBS. Her choreography credits include Miss Saigon, Mack and Mabel and for Arena Stage in Washington, DC, Animal Crackers, South Pacific (Helen Hayes nom2021), Coconuts, and Camelot. Lee founded National Asian Artists Project and her vision includes educating, cultivating, and stimulating audiences and artists of Asiandescent. She is the recipient of many awards including the Isabelle Stevens Tony Award, Paul Robeson Award from Actors Equity Association, the Asian Woman Warrior Award for Lifetime Achievement from Columbia College, Asian Pacific American Heritage Association Achievement In Arts Award, the Dynamic Achiever Award from OCA Westchester, Chen Dance Center Artist Award, Arena Stage American Artist Award, and Actors Fund for Outstanding Contribution to the World of Dance.
MERRI SUGARMAN (Senior Casting Director, Tara Rubin Casting) began her career as an actress before moving into casting for television and film on such shows as Seinfeld, Party of Five, HBO’s Band of Brothers, the feature film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She soon becamethe Casting Executive of TPilots and Series for Dreamworks Studios before being named the Director of Casting for Dramas and
Movies at ABC Television where she oversaw Alias, NYPD Blue, The Practice, Gilda Radner – It’s Always Something and The Music Man starring Matthew Broderick. She has worked on dozen of Broadway, touring and international companies including The Who’s Tommy, Water for Elephants, Company, The Outsiders, The Wiz, Six, Ain’t Too Proud, Dear Evan Hansen, Aladdin, Jersey Boys, Here Lies Love, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, School of Rock, Miss Saigon and A Bronx Tale, as well as Off-Broadway’s Clueless the Musical, Trevor the Musical, and Fiddler on the Roof. She also casts for many theaters regionally including The Paper Mill Playhouse, Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Old Globe, Seattle Rep, The Goodman and The La Jolla Playhouse. TOM VIERTEL and his partners, Richard Frankel, Marc Routh and Steve Baruch have produced and general managed plays and musicals for the past 39 years, including many award-winning original Broadway productions including The Producers; Hairspray; Young Frankenstein; Smokey Joe’s Café; Angels in America; Penn & Teller; Love Letters, Swing!; The Weir; The Encounter and The Parisian Woman starring Uma Thurman. Their revivals on Broadway include Gypsy with Patti LuPone and Laura Benanti, the Old Vic’s The Norman Conquests, A Little Night Music with Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury and later Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch, John Doyle’s Sweeney Todd with Patti LuPone and Company with Raul Esparza; A Funny Thing… Forum with Nathan Lane and later Whoopi Goldberg, and the first-ever Broadway revivals of The Sound of Music and Little Shop of Horrors. JASON GOTAY is an actor and teaching artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He most recently appeared in the world premiere of Teeth at Playwrights Horizons, written by Michael R. Jackson and Anna K. Jacobs. Prior to that, he performed his autobiographical solo show “Where You’ll Find Me” at the Minetta Lane Theater (available on Audible). He made his Broadway debut in the original company of Bring It On: The Musical (nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical). Other Broadway/New York credits include Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, Che in New York City Center’s acclaimed revival of Evita, Irving Berlin’s Call Me Madam, and Transport Group’s Renascence written by Carmel Dean and Dick Scanlan. He has appeared in the world premieres of Stephen Schwartz’s The Prince of Egypt, Disney’s Freaky Friday, and A Bronx Tale, as well as NBC’s Peter Pan Live! Additional TV/Film credits include Gossip

BRITTNEY MACK The Queendom calls her “The Queen of the Castle” for her breakout roll as the original Anne of Cleves in Broadway’s SIX the Musical. Brittney Mack is a Grammy Nominee, Drama Desk Winner, and 2x Drama League Nominee for Distinguished Performance. Born on Chicago’s southside Brittney had the incredible opportunity attend The Chicago Academy for the Arts College Prep High School where she majored in Music Theatre. She then furthered her training at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in L.A. then NYC where she graduated. Brittney Mack is a teaching artist and industry coach that believes there is no point in having gifts and talents if you aren’t going to share them with the world. Most importantly she is working to inspire any and everyone who needs a little reminder that “YOU CAN DO IT!
SHANNON MULLEN is a professional actor and choreographer based in New York City. She has performed on Broadway and served as dance captain in both A Bronx Tale and Pretty Woman. She has toured on the Broadway National tours of Hairspray (Tammy), Legally Blonde (Brooke Wyndham) and Rock of Ages (Sherrie). Most recently, Shannon has workshopped and been seen in the out-of-town tryout for Come Fall in Love at The Old Globe which is slated to come to Broadway in the near future. In addition to her performing, Shannon
is an esteemed choreographer. She has choreographed and been the associate director for regional productions of A Bronx Tale, Head Over Heels and Footloose. She has also co-created and choreographed NY’s BoyBand Review and been hired to create industrials in the NY area. She prides herself on her versatility both on the stage and off to foster her ability to bridge the gap between the actors and the audience.
JELANI REMY is currently starring as Goldie Wilson/Marvin Berry in Back To The Future at The Winter Garden Theater! He is a New Jersey native and Montclair State University alumni. Past Broadway shows: Disney’s The Lion King (Simba) and Eddie Kendricks in Ain’t Too Proud The Life and Times of the Temptations. ISAAC HARLAN is a Pittsburgh native who studied piano at Penn State University. Since 2010 he has worked in NYC as a pianist, music director and orchestrator. Isaac has played concerts for Norm Lewis, Shoshana Bean, and Brandon Victor Dixon, and has also had the pleasure of working on developing musicals by writers such as Tituss Burgess, Alex Gemignani, MichaelMcElroy, and Black Thought. He accompanies the younger generation of singers through his work with NYU, YoungArts, and the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Isaac also works with the Broadway Inspirational Voices, a grammy-nominated gospel choir, as a pianist and orchestrator. In the summer of 2022, he was a featured pianist at Little Island’s Music and Dance Festival. Most recently he was orchestrator,conductor and pianist for Sonnets and Soul, a new musical which was produced at Howard University.
Shane Parus is a New York City based music director, pianist, and conductor. National Tours: PRETTY WOMAN, ELF, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, MEMPHIS, WE THE PEOPLE. Regionally, he’s music directed at Westchester Broadway Theatre and The New London Barn Playhouse, in addition to performing in productions at North Shore Music Theatre, The REV Theatre Company, and Mason Street Warehouse. He has worked with Grammy and Tony Award winners and regularly performs with Adam Pascal in concerts and cabarets across the country. This summer, he will be joining the Music Director faculty for the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s Cabaret and Performance Conference. In NYC, he has performed in the BCEFA Easter Bonnet Orchestra at the Minskoff Theatre, and for cabarets at 54 Below, Le Poisson Rouge, The Stonewall Inn, and The Duplex. He also serves on the piano faculty at American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. For many years, he was a band leader, pianist, and percussionist for Holland America Cruise Line and Seabourn Cruise Line. CHRISTINE RILEY is a Music Director and Vocal Coach in New York as well as an Associate Professor of Musical Theatre at Marymount Manhattan College. Who’s Tommy, Pangaea, The Servant of Two Masters,Shout! The Mod Musical, Edges, Sweet Charity, Rags,Triumph of Love, Wonderland, and The Boys From Syracuse at Marymount Manhattan and many shows around the country and for Camp Broadway. Recently, she published a book, Music Fundamentals for Musical Theatre, with Bloomsbury Press. Christine received her BM from Ithaca College and an MM from Arizona State University.
