Dear Parent,

We are pleased to introduce you to the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, a program established by Camp Broadway LLC and the Broadway Education Alliance. The mission of the program is to promote the educational value of musical theater in schools, as well as celebrate emerging talent—on stage, backstage and off stage.

Program Introduction

The Roger Rees Awards will confer the awards of Best Actor and Best Actress Awards on two students from the Greater New York area. These two students will go on to represent the region at The Broadway League Foundation’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (NHSMTA®) aka The Jimmy® Awards, on Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.

We anticipate an exciting showcase of talent at the Roger Rees Awards, which will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2019. All public and private high schools in the Greater New York City area, who produce a full production of an officially licensed musical during the academic year have been invited to participate. Any student performing in a qualifying role (as identified by the National High School Musical Theater Awards® organization) is eligible for consideration.

Student Adjudication Process

Registered schools will have their musical performance attended by several professional artists serving as adjudicators who will evaluate the eligible students in several categories. Adjudicators follow a rubric distributed by the Roger Rees Awards.

Based on their total scores, the top 50 eligible students (25 men and 25 women) from across the region will be invited to compete at the Roger Rees Awards event. These students will be announced on May 7, 2019.

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, these 50 students will participate in a full-day enrichment program that includes a group Master Class and individual coaching sessions with experienced Broadway professionals. Coaches will select 12 students (6 men and 6 women) to perform solos for a panel of industry professionals serving as judges. These judges will select the Roger Rees Award winners for Best Actor and Best Actress, as well as the Up & Comer Award winners which will be announced on Sunday, May 19, 2019, at The Roger Rees Awards showcase and ceremony.

The Best Actor and Best Actress winners will represent the Greater New York metro area at the Jimmy® Awards which will take place at the Minskoff Theatre on Monday, June 24, 2019, following an all-expenses paid 9-day musical theatre intensive held at New York University Tisch School of the Arts Studio on Broadway.
