Broadway’s Everywhere!

Camp Broadways is so excited for 2012! It already looks like this is a huge year for Broadway with TV shows and movie musicals that have theatre-inspired themes galore. Here’s some of what we’re most excited for. Let us know if we’ve missed anything in the comments!

1. SMASH: This new show on NBC is all about what it takes to build a Broadway musical from the ground up. The first episode is available now on iTunes; the show premieres on the Monday after the Super Bowl. Here at Camp Broadway we’ve already watched the episode and loved seeing some of our favorite Broadway performers (Christian Borle, Brian D’Arcy James, Megan Hilty) on the silver screen as well as quotes that remind us why we love what we do. Be sure to catch the new show to see what we mean.

2. LES MISERABLES, the movie: Sure, we have to wait until December, but the buzz about this film is already getting us giddy (and anxious to buy our tickets the moment they go on pre-sale!). With huge crossover stars like Taylor Swift, Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman getting ready to belt out some of the most beloved Broadway tunes of all time on screen alongside Broadway pros like Aaron Tveit, this movie has already won us over. But over on Camp Broadway’s Facebook, some comments made us realize that Broadway purists don’t always like seeing musicals via Hollywood. While we love the idea of making Broadway accessible to more viewers, we want to know what you think! Let us know in the comments.

3. GLEE: This show never disappoints when it comes to real Broadway chops: Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, Idina Menzel, Matthew Morrison and more have all proved that they have what it takes to perform live or on the silver screen. And with college news coming up for the gang, we can’t wait to see what sort of songs are turned into plot devices a la musical theatre. Also, don’t forget: there are a few more chances to catch Darren Criss in HOW TO SUCCEED before Nick Jonas takes over and you can also catch warbler (and former Camp Broadway workshop leader) Telly Leung in GODSPELL!

4. MOVIES TURNED MUSICALS: It seems that the usual course of eventshas beloved Broadway musicals turning into movies after reaching great success on the Great White Way. But 2012 has a remarkable number of movies-turned-musicals in the queue. Playbill.com cites a number of upcoming shows based on movies including GHOST, ONCE, BIG FISH, KINKY BOOTS, BRING IT ON, FATHER OF THE BRIDE and more! Maybe the success of BILLY ELLIOT and PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT has inspired a new trend! Let us know in the comments which you’re most excited for.
